The road to Sweethollow wound down through orchards heavy with late apples. Copper had spent most of the morning asleep on the saddle, waking only to sneeze at passing bees.

Aldric had rehearsed his speech four times since the crossroads. Sir Edwina always said that a squire should sound certain even when he was not, which was easy for Sir Edwina to say.

By the time the mill came into view, he had settled on a version that was mostly confident and only slightly about grain.

Sweethollow proved to be a charming village nestled between rolling hills, its thatched cottages arranged in cheerful clusters around the green. A millwheel turned lazily in the stream, and the late sun painted everything in amber and gold.

Aldric rode into the square trying to look dignified and knightly, which was somewhat undermined by Copper, still perched on his saddle and watching everything with bright, curious eyes.
